Community: ICC Pudu and The Modern Evolution of Imbi Market

May 8, 2025

Overview

Nestled in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the Integrated Commercial Complex, Pudu (ICC Pudu) is a contemporary wet market and hawker centre that serves as the new home for the historic Imbi Market. Imbi Market was one of Kuala Lumpur’s oldest and most beloved traditional markets, known for its vibrant mix of local street food and fresh produce. Also known as Pasar Baru Bukit Bintang, Imbi Market originally started in Jalan Bukit Bintang before moving to Imbi 30 years ago at the development site of Tun Razak Exchange (TRX). The relocation of the market to ICC Pudu, a seven-storey complex on Jalan Kijang, reflects TRX City’s commitment to enhancing community spaces. This move aligns with the company’s broader goals of sustainable urban development.

ICC Pudu is built on a 2.5 acre land; this transition was designed to provide better infrastructure while preserving the essence of the original market. Jointly built with DBKL, it was constructed to modernise and replace Kuala Lumpur’s typically chaotic wet market with one that is more organised and clean. Today, ICC Pudu has become a gastronomic haven for affordable and authentic local foods.

Participants and Targets

With more than 250 traders calling ICC Pudu home, the complex continues to serve small business owners, food hawkers, and fresh produce vendors. It caters to a diverse audience, from former Imbi Market patrons seeking their favorite street food to KL residents who appreciate the authenticity of Malaysian hawker-style dining. Tourists looking to indulge in a true Malaysian culinary experience also find themselves drawn to ICC Pudu’s bustling stalls. Additionally, small business owners, nearby office workers, and residents in the Pudu area frequent the market for their daily grocery needs.

Achievements and Outcome

The development of ICC Pudu aligns with key ESG principles, championing sustainability and community well-being. By providing a cleaner and more structured marketplace with ample parking, traders now operate in a safer and more conducive environment, ensuring business continuity. Cultural preservation remains at the heart of ICC Pudu, with many original Imbi Market vendors continuing their legacy in a refreshed, contemporary setting. More than just a market, ICC Pudu strengthens community bonds, offering a space where people come together for commerce, culture, and connection.
